Our Approach

Read Charlotte routinely partners with local organizations to co-develop business plans to either scale or launch new strategic initiatives within these three areas. Examples include Reach Out and Read Carolinas (Reach Out and Read), Child Care Resources Inc. (Ready To Read), Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (Active Reading workshops), United Way of Central Carolinas (Tutor Charlotte), YMCA of Greater Charlotte (Summer Literacy Infusion Project) and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (Early Literacy Continuous Improvement).

Read Charlotte has a two-part financial model to support our work. A portion of financial contributions to Read Charlotte ($2.815 million) over the first five years (2015-2019) goes into a pooled Transformation Fund, which promotes innovation, capacity building, collaboration, and seeds new programs addressing unmet early literacy needs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Funding proposals recommended by staff are first reviewed by a five-person Grant Committee, and then voted on by the full Governing Board. We also have the ability to open competitive grant applications for the Transformation Fund.

In addition, Read Charlotte advises area funders on strategic co-funding opportunities. Read Charlotte three times a year convenes the local funding community that is interested in early literacy. As of October 1, 2018, Read Charlotte has helped to coordinate over $5.5 million in targeted co-funding for identified strategic literacy investments.
